Tatianna Sattaur's Story

Education has always been important to me, especially coming from immigrant parents. I think this was important to them as they knew the struggle of not having an education and they wanted to make sure I had the tools to be successful in life. My first education venture was from 4 – 8 years old and I was enrolled in an Islamic School in New York as they wanted to make sure I not only receive a great education but also learned about my religion as well.
At the age of 8 – 16 years old, I migrated to Guyana and started a new educational journey. It was different compared to my previous school; it was different because the educational system was different but interesting at the same time. I was learning a new culture and history that was completely exciting but scary all at the same time. As I entered high school my school was specifically known for switching the education path into more of a business outlook, so I spent my time learning about accounting, business administration, finance, economics, and normal studies like math and English. This led me to enjoy business and understand what makes a business successful and unsuccessful. It made me look at my parents’ business and let me assist them with certain things like the accounting aspects.
When I turned 16 years old, I was given the opportunity to return to New York to complete my education, after considering my options I decided to leave my parents in the hopes of graduating high school and attending college. After returning to the United States, it was definitely an eye-opener as the educational system in New York had decided that my education in Guyana did not meet the state standards, so I was placed in a lower grade. After having to relearn certain subjects and writing multiple regents I graduated with a high school diploma with honors. Entering college, I knew I wanted to study business but couldn’t pin on what area to go into. After researching business and the different areas, I decided to view my concentration in International Business at CUNY York College. Being in college it had brought me so many opportunities in my career that I am truly grateful for.
